Cato institute thinks otherwise.

And before you say it:

They seem to think it was George H W Bush and the republican congress who's policies are what lead to the Clinton surplus.

Thoughts?

Then why do presidents get the credit or blame for the economy?

False premise. He came close, but didn't, they just throw flowers at him and say he did.

How do we know this?

Forget what they tell you, and check the one thing that tells the truth----------->check the NATIONAL DEBT! It kept rising, much more slowly, but rise it did! If the budget was balanced, it would have remained the same.........or is a balanced budget in Leftist speak different than what is in a dictionary!

? The question was, did the balanced budget happen BECAUSE of Clinton, or did it just happen while he was there, but set up by the administration before him?

P.S. The reason what I have stated is 100% fact, is because Clinton used the SS fund to balance the budget, meaning the SS fund was losing money, which explains why the National Debt kept rising.

Lol, might have something to do with the fact that there was cooperation on both sides of the isle back then. Presidents do not operate in a vacuum. Same thing under Reagan. Both sides worked together. Yes both Congress and Clinton had their part. Now politics is well not functioning like it use to be. United we stand and divided we fall. We are divided and it shows in the outcome.

It didn't happen? Here, let me rewrite it---------> it should be..........DID Clinton get to pretend he balanced the budget because of what Bush and the GOP did, or did he engineer it all by himself to make himself look good?!?!?!

Clinton was the guy that got China into the WTO. He was a rotten President in my opinion.

Then why do presidents get the credit or blame for the economy?
They really shouldn't. It's the total Washington environment that should. Bubba would never have gotten close to balance without Newt, for just one example.

I think that's kinda what I said, isn't it?

Who gets credit for something in politics has little to do with who’s actually responsible. We blame/laud Presidents all the time for gas prices.

If Clinton didn't have a deficit surplus, why did Bush give it away?

The fall of the Soviet Union and the policy changes going back to Reagan allowed Clinton and the congresses he oversaw balance the budget. To be fair he actually took the opprotunity to do it, which he deserves credit.

But then the draw of $$ became to0 great over time. Then throw in 9/11, the 2008 bank crisis, and COVID and the runaway borrowing spree was on.

Nixon normalized relations between China and the United States. Nixon was not Conservative.
True. He surprised a lot of people on both sides with his liberal policies.

Clinton's first two years was a prelude to the Progressive Socialist hardliners we see today. Hillary had a say then. The Republican revolution in 1994 saved him. Of course, without Perot he would be an asterisk. And George Sr. and Dole were D.C. lifers.
