Adding "new and exciting" meanings to things that are already out there is nothing new to society. Christmas went from the Lord's birth to Santa Claus and flying reindeer; Easter Sunday went from the Lord's resurrection to the Easter bunny and the rainbow eventually became the symbol for the LGBTQ community instead of it being the Lord's sign about flooding the Earth again.
