No, not the old dueling banjos kind of deliverance. I just watched a Lisa Ling Our America documentary concerning a fundie religious movement called deliverance. Pretty interesting actually. The believers go to a "pastor" and/or "church" where they hold the kind of service you would expect - hooting and hollering and speaking in tongues kind of stuff but they also are given plastic bags and they cough or throw up the devil into the bag.

Imagine a whole room full of loudly hollering people throwing up into barf bags!

Not "deliverance" but Deliver Me!!

The interesting part is that it seems to help the believers. Its like voodoo - works if you believe it is real. Doesn't really matter though because, in the cases she showed, people were much more able to handle their every day stresses - jobs, kids, family and so on.

Here's the documentary

Check out the comments below the video. People actually believe this stuff but if you watch, its as much talk therapy as theater.

Yes, it seems laughable to me that anyone would believe they can cough up the devil but what's the harm if it helps these people?

Anybody else know anything about vomiting up satan?

"He sure do have a pretty mouth"....

I'm not going to sleep well tonight...

Thanks...

The believers were of various colors and as I said, this looks to me to be as much therapy as bible thumping. If these people were paying (tithing, call it whatever you want), I didn't see it. Frankly, its kind of nice to see something good come out of a religious group.

Looks to me like the assholes, Sunni "man" and manonthestreet and rozman above are the bigots.

My Dad, tongue in cheek, called it voodoo. It's usually for show or the result of a sort of whipped up frenzy.

Speaking in tongues is Biblical. Of the two definitions, speaking in the Spirit is used just a few times. It is described as ecstatic utterance. King David would dance and sing in the Spirit.

Dialect is the form most used in the Bible though. For instance, the Spirit came to Jesus as a dove. The Spirit showed up as fiery tongues (dialect) that the disciples received so they would be understood by the different ethnic groups they went out to teach.

Glossolalia: This is the most commonly thought of translation of "speaking in tongues". This term is derived from two Greek words: glõssai, which means "tongues" or "languages," and lalien which means "to speak", a phenomenon of intense religious experience expressing itself in ecstatic speech."

Xenoglossia: (a.k.a. Zenolalia, Xenoglossia) This is the ability to spontaneously speak a foreign language without first having learned it, or even been exposed to it. This term is also derived from two Greek words: Xenos, which means "foreign" or "foreigner", and glõssai, which means "tongues" or "languages."

One might ask the same about any unsubstantiated belief system. The harm is when they think someone else is evil for rejecting those same beliefs. Losing your mind might be a therapeutic stress reliever and great fun........ until a time comes when you need a functioning brain.

Can you think of the harm that might occur in a democracy when the majority of people are incapable of rational thought?

Anybody else know anything about vomiting up satan?

"Take from my hand this cup of fiery wine and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. When they have drunk it they will vomit and go mad; such is the sword that I am sending among them"

Poisoned wine in the bible?

Pretty tame when compared to the murder, rape, incest also described in the bible.

The past 2000 years of people drunk on Jesus juice make the murder, rape and incest in the bible seem tame.
