I was on vacation as a teenager during the attempted coup earlier that year, and everyone was nervous that the hardliners would take over and try to get back Eastern Europe by force.

The "Soviet Union" merely morphed into the Russia we know today. Nothing to celebrate except the fall of the Berlin Wall.
