"Former NFL star Darren Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday for drugging and raping up to 16 women in four states, the Associated Press reports. The crimes, which Sharper pleaded guilty or no-contest to last year, occurred in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada.
A sentence of nine years in prison was previously suggested for Sharper, 40, but U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo said the sentence was too lenient for the crime, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. Milazzo rejected the nine-year sentence in February.
Sharper, who was also fined $20,000, is convicted of teaming up with former sheriff’s deputy Brandon Licciardi and another defendant, Erik Nunez, to spike nine women’s drinks so they could rape them while the women were sedated. Licciardi is expected to be sentenced in October. Judge Milazzo, however, has indicated that seven more women may have also been victims."
