Was the monster based on something called a "wakinda" or "wendigo" ?

The film features a "Wendigo", a cannibalistic creature of Native American (Algonquin) folklore. However (at around 44 mins) when Sheriff Shields is looking for a three toed animals in Internet in an attempt to explain the happenings in the town, it appears written as "Windiga".
