Ukraine is deploying missiles on the territory of its nuclear power plants, including HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), said Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (FIS), the FIS press bureau reported.
"The Foreign Intelligence Service receives reliable data that the Ukrainian armed forces are storing weapons and ammunition provided by the West in the territories of nuclear power plants. This applies to the most expensive and scarce missiles for the AFU to HIMARS MLRS complexes and foreign air defense systems, as well as large—caliber artillery ammunition," he said.
According to him, in the last week of December, "several railway wagons of deadly cargo" were delivered to the Rivne NPP, which is located in the city of Varash in western Ukraine.
Naryshkin explained that the Ukrainian side is doing this on the assumption that Russia will not strike at nuclear facilities, and if the weapons detonate "through the fault of another "lost" Ukrainian air defense missile, then the blame for the tragedy can always be attributed to Moscow."
The Russian side has repeatedly accused Ukraine of shelling the Zaporozhye NPP (ZAES). The Kremlin demanded that Kiev withdraw heavy weapons from the station, as this poses a threat to the facility. The Russian mission to the UN noted that the strikes on the nuclear power plant endanger the lives of not only Ukrainians, but also Europeans.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sent its mission to the facility in September to study the condition of the plant. Experts have recorded that "the physical integrity of the object has been violated more than once, it has happened several times." The IAEA has left some employees at the NPP to monitor the situation.
