Just a few hours before President Joe Biden announced that he will not seek a second term in the White House, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson threatened lawsuits to try to force Biden to appear as the Democratic candidate on at least some state ballots.​

First I've heard of that. That would go nowhere since the Democrats control the DOJ. This is all eerily familiar how the Democrats took the nomination from Bernie Sanders and handed it to Joe Biden via his buddy Jim Clyburn. And I don't think they're suing to get money, I think that in all likelihood they'd be suing to get an injunction preventing Harris from replacing Biden as the Democratic candidate. Essentially forcing Biden to run which seems a little bit bizarre to me but this is just as new to me as it is to everyone else.

No--and why would they? If the democrats don't show their hand before the convention, they won't be on the ballots of some states--do you think an unpopular, incompetent VP candidate can afford to concede electoral votes to the opposition?

They can't do anything. This is Trumps mo his entire adult llife. Sue if you can't have your way, hope to stall this out. But the Republican party can't stop anybody from refusing to run. They ran their mouths about Biden being too old and how Democrats needed to get him out. Now the dog has bit it's taill and found the pain.

Besides, in the end its up to people to vote and no amount of suing stops anything if the majority of the people vote against Trump. And Harris is the VP, so...

No, simple answer. A political party has to be able to choose their own candidate. Biden was never the candidate for the Democratic Party because the convention hasn't happened. And states have to stay out of party internal politics like this, otherwise it becomes pointless.

Charles Spies, a former counsel for the Republican National Committee, argued in a recent opinion article for The Wall Street Journal that without having formally accepted the Democratic party's nomination, Biden is limited to transferring just $2,000 of the campaign's war chest to any other candidate — including Harris.

"There is no legal mechanism to somehow switch that money to being for Harris before either Biden or Harris is their party's nominee," Spies told BI, arguing that donors provided funds with the understanding they were donating to a Biden presidential campaign so the money is non-transferable.
