I think about dementia when I recall my trips to a huge medical complex in an ambulance after a bike crash in a race. Seven that I remember. A helmet was worn, but that just saved me from instant death. It is weird when you wake up on the tarmac just when you are loaded for a ride to a CT scan. My first thoughts are to go to the $7,000 bike. Priorities, you know. Oddly, I can remember everything about all of those crashes except for the time I was unconscious. The last crash was about nine years ago. A split second of inattention is all it takes for a crash. That wheel in front is both friend and foe. It’s a zero-sum game, all or nothing. That is why I like it. I am going to be 80 soon and I still mount that wheel. No excuses, no apologies, take it or leave it.

Dementia? Didn't you post this last week?

Get a recumbent bike, that way when you fall off it you are close to the ground.
They are low to the ground and not visible even with a flag on a pole and flashing lights. They are also unstable in turns.

There is no hobby or pastime so frivolous that some people won't turn it into a massively-expensive campaign.

I enjoy riding my bikes, and it gives me a bit of exercise into the bargain. If I added all of the bicycles and biking expenses I've incurred in 70 years of riding, I don't think the total would reach $2,500.

If I had a bike crash that put me in the hospital that would be the end of it.
