The number of people who now carry a gun in public for self defense........keeping in mind that many states now have Constitutional Carry.....

Abstract
After a spike in 2022, the number of Concealed Carry Permit holders across the United States fell for a second consecutive year. The figure now stands at 21.46 million – a 1.8% drop since last year. A major cause of the continuous decline is that 29 states now have Constitutional Carry laws after Louisiana allowing permitless carry, effective July 4, 2024. In other words, 46.8% of Americans (157.6 million) now live in Constitutional Carry States, with 67.7% of the land in the country (2.57 million square miles). Unlike gun ownership surveys that may be affected by people’s unwillingness to answer personal questions, concealed handgun permit data is the only really “hard data” that we have, but it becomes a less accurate measure as more states become Constitutional Carry states.

My fault for listening to the media which reported we no longer need them only to find out I do if I want to buy I firearm on the same day I need one that's up to date or wait for a few days. No big deal but it was a surprise so I will look into retaking the class or get my updated somehow.

If I did not regularly travel to states that require a permit, I probably would not have one.
But I do, so I do.
I suspect many are like me.
Universal carry is needed. Even if you have a permit to carry in one state, like PA, and get stopped in another, like NJ, you could end up in prison, like a young mother did.

You have a right o carry a gun in the US, and that right is protected by the constitution.
States cannot prohibit you from doing so just because you do not live in that state.

Just remember--it's not a "permit." The gov does not permit or allow anything. Government can only restrict.

They used the same news speak during the Corona crap. You might remember all the imbecilic terms:

"lockdown"
"essential worker"
"super spreader"
Etc.

Don't buy into the BS terms. Vocabulary matters. Words matter.

But yes, great news. We are waiting for a real governor in my state so we can all freely carry.

...as I was saying, we need universal carry permits.

Honest mistake' leads to Philly mother facing three years on gun charge

Gun laws are funny at best, but they seem to relax more as time goes by. When I was just a boy, no one legally carried concealed, unless they were in an alphabet LEO group.

In some, maybe all, permitless carry laws only apply to residents of that state. So, even if you go from your home state to a permitless carry state you still need a permit from your home state.

The law in the state I grew up in said that if any part of a gun was covered that it was an illegally concealed weapon. That meant that you carried a gun in a holster, that part of the gun was covered.

If you carried it in your hand, the grip part would be covered.
