My reproduction Viking bearded axe just arrived. It's pictured here among other ancient Viking tech........... :eusa_whistle:

I hope that wood is Hickory.
There was an axe found in a Viking burial mound (yes they buried that way also) that had the handle wrapped in either brass or copper. Very highly decorated. It is believed that was done to keep the handle from breaking in combat. Other ones had a copper wrap just under the head, again possibly to protect the handle during us either in battle or chopping firewood.

It's a reproduction Norse war axe and only 30" long. Unlike the Dane Axe that could measure from 3' to 6'.

Here's a pretty nice one you can buy for only $225.00. Functional. Comes with a real screaming Viking too. Check out the video.

That's ok, I'm not interested in fantasy axes........ Besides I already own one, it's a wall hanger.

Were the original axes cast and made from one piece of iron? I've sold two authentic 1700's trade axes before and they used the "wrap and weld" laminated iron method. They would hammer a piece of iron flat, fold it in half, then heat it up in a charcoal furnace. You could actually see the layers.

Nah, it's actually functional! The guy is throwing it at trees and chopping tree branches with it!

I actually just watched a couple hours of Forged In Fire TV show where they show people making that stuff from scratch. Pretty nifty.

It's functional but it's a "Viking Inspired" modern "fantasy" axe not a true reproduction. It might work if you're cosplaying almost every Viking movie and TV series. Heck, do a Viking weapon, jewelry, footwear, armor, etc search and 90 to 95% of the search results will not be authentic reproductions.
I'm into as historically accurate as I can get. My next Viking purchase will be a spear, the spear and axe were the two most used weapons. I might eventually get a Viking Seax knife, the longer ones are almost like a short sword.

To the best of my knowledge yes they were folded though I haven't check into it that deeply. This reproduction was cast.

Most repro axes are cast. It would take too much time and effort to make them the way they used to.

Nice looking chopper though. Save it for the zombie apocalypse if Kackling Kamala happens to be elected.

You'll probably need it. :auiqs.jpg:

Why did I misread that as "Viking sex knife"? :laughing0301:

Not long after I found this "Raven Head" knife, carbon steel, sharp as a razor with a poorly leather wrapped handle. It was cheap so I over wrapped it in hemp cord and now it fits my hand perfectly.

Now for my next blade purchase, a two foot Viking hewing spear head. I was going to wait on buying one but this went on sale (dropped $30) so I just had to. Now I need a nice shaft for it.
