Depends on where we're raiding..........You keep a battle axe at your office desk? Where the hell do you work?![]()
There was an axe found in a Viking burial mound (yes they buried that way also) that had the handle wrapped in either brass or copper. Very highly decorated. It is believed that was done to keep the handle from breaking in combat. Other ones had a copper wrap just under the head, again possibly to protect the handle during us either in battle or chopping firewood.I hope that wood is Hickory.

It's functional but it's a "Viking Inspired" modern "fantasy" axe not a true reproduction. It might work if you're cosplaying almost every Viking movie and TV series. Heck, do a Viking weapon, jewelry, footwear, armor, etc search and 90 to 95% of the search results will not be authentic reproductions.Nah, it's actually functional! The guy is throwing it at trees and chopping tree branches with it!
I actually just watched a couple hours of Forged In Fire TV show where they show people making that stuff from scratch. Pretty nifty.
To the best of my knowledge yes they were folded though I haven't check into it that deeply. This reproduction was cast. Were the original axes cast and made from one piece of iron? I've sold two authentic 1700's trade axes before and they used the "wrap and weld" laminated iron method. They would hammer a piece of iron flat, fold it in half, then heat it up in a charcoal furnace. You could actually see the layers.

I'm into as historically accurate as I can get. My next Viking purchase will be a spear, the spear and axe were the two most used weapons. I might eventually get a Viking Seax knife, the longer ones are almost like a short sword.

The haft is meant to decorated or altered by the user. I'd shorten it by 5-6" and wrap it in tanned eel skin about 2/3 the way up.why did they mount it on a mop handle?
