But a New York Times review of thousands of pages of public records, and interviews with bankers, lawyers and businessmen who have interacted with Mrs Clinton, reveal the degree to which she has often operated in the backwaters of the financial and legal worlds.
While she has not been charged with a crime, many of her associates have faced either criminal charges or stiff regulatory penalties. That includes partners in the transportation business, doctors for whom she helped establish medical clinics and lawyers with whom she worked.
In addition to her businesses mentioned above, Mrs. Clinton has quietly had a charmed touch as a real estate investor. On one day in 2014, she sold four properties in Manhattan for tens-of-millions in cash transactions. She managed to triple her investment in little more than three years.
As a former executive vice president and senior credit officer at a well known bank, Ben Berzin explained. “ ‘The speed with which Mrs. Clinton flipped her real estate stands out, which would cause most bankers steer clear of doing business with her.’ Berzin said. ‘You have to ask how could anyone, legally, make so much profit so quickly.’ “
