Can someone explain the importance of "gender neutrality"?

Hoping for some clear, straightforward answers here. Why is this push for gender-neutral bathrooms and items (Target Takes Another Step Toward Gender Neutrality with Its New “Pillowfort” Line) gaining such momentum now? Two questions, specifically:

1. Is this in reaction to something? If so, what?

2. What is the ultimate goal? Would would our society and culture look like in the end if we become gender neutral?

That's it. And it more than likely is a cost saving measure--just as parents would use it.

Target needs to, just as department stores have to, update and reinvent themselves or die. Most of the US population has moved on to HGTV and some of the stores are still 20-30 years behind. I think trying to tie a store, like Target, to some higher good is a mistake. It usually indicates a gimick.

There was the androgyny "style" in the 1980's, nowadays we have people who's gender depends on how they "feel" at the moment. Marketers follow these trends and think they are cutting edge. In the old days, before we were told by our betters that what's inside your pants is something to be discussed at length, gender neutral simply meant you painted the baby's room yellow or green because you didn't know if it was going to be a boy or girl.

I don't know what the ultimate goal is, but you have to wonder, if we'll all gender neutral, does that mean we won't make babies the old fashioned way anymore?

I dont agree with all aspects of the "movement," but in a way it frees thought as opposed to limiting it.

Women in the Military, Workforce and functioning as World Leaders is all a part of that.

If we continued to view gender through the "traditional" lense, those things we not going to happen thus "gender neutral" thinking in some ways alleviates limited thinking & limited freedoms.
