California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing an "asset test" for seniors to prove eligibility for Medi-Cal healthcare benefits for low-income Californians in response to a budget shortfall. To qualify, people would have to possess less than $2,000 in assets to qualify.

Newsom has also proposed freezing new enrollment for adults in the country illegally as a way to cut Medi-Cal costs.

The program cost $37.6 billion over the last year, and the cost is expected to increase by $10 billion over the next year without cuts.

In California and you have less than $2,000 in assets? Is that even possible? That may cut the annual budget for Medi-Cal from $37.6 billion/year down to what? $8 billion/year? If nothing else, the scammers will have to get more creative. Also, freezing new enrollment for “illegals”. Doesn’t California feel all illegals are “undocumented” legals?

The asset limit of $2,000 is pretty standard throughout the country. Has been for a long time. That does not count your residence and one car.

Apparently that's not the case in California, and the proposal would include the value of one's home.

Where do you get this shit?

Newsom has proposed restoring a $2,000 limit on an individual’s assets — including savings accounts and property other than a home and a car — and $3,000 for couples to qualify for Medi-Cal.

We can only imagine the width and depth of California corruption. How's that "train to nowhere" coming along? I guess it stalled because they ONLY received 100 billion dollars in funding.

So the same qualification to get on Medicaid if you are single?

I mean I can understand not reading other links, but don't you read the links you post.

Although qualifications vary by state, your income generally must be less than $2,382 per month. You can allocate as much as $3,259.50 of your monthly income to a spouse, whose income isn’t considered, and still meet the Medicaid limit. Your assets must be $2,000 or less, with a spouse allowed to keep up to $130,380. Cash, bank accounts, real estate other than a primary residence, and investments, including those in an IRA or 401(k), all count as assets. But you may keep a personal residence, nonluxury personal belongings like clothes and home appliances, one vehicle, engagement and wedding rings, and a prepaid burial plot.

The article speaks more to not having to impoverish your spouse. If you are single then you must meet the asset requirement.

I just went through that with my mom but she only lasted 12 days in the nursing home so I didn't have to sell anything. Just looking at the current rules they are pretty strict.

Meanwhile lard-ass young people sit on their ass collecting a Medicaid check.

I am sorry about your Mom. Our elderly deserve so much more than what they are getting. And yes, the rules are strict, but they are far stricter than you realize. Sure, the spouse can keep the home. But unless the doctor says there is a chance someone will come out of the nursing home, the primary residence of a single person is not protected. Same for the car.

And that protection, it is temporary. That primary residence of the surviving spouse, Medicaid will put a lien on it, collect when the surviving spouse passes away. In my neighborhood I have seen it happen more than once. Homes sold at auction, nursing home collecting the benefits, survivors left with nothing.

But I have to disagree with you on lard-ass young people collecting a Medicaid check. There is no Medicaid check, it covers medical expenses. There is no cash flow, unless, of course, you get involved with Medicaid fraud, collecting kickbacks from providers, and yes, that certainly happens. But, it is rare, and easily uncovered with a minimum investigation.

Yep you are correct about the pretty draconian asset requirements. Then again it's a last resort type of thing.....Nursing home cost was near 8K a month a bit better than a year ago.

Buy the time most folks think of insuring themselves that ship has sailed affordability wise.

If he kicked all the illegals off Medi-Cal he likely would need not impose any additional restrictions on poor citizens of California.

Fifth paragraph down. Perhaps you may want to read the link.

The assets included in the test would be salary, money in a bank account, cash on hand, a second car, home value and retirement funds. Applicants with more than $2,000 in assets would be ineligible for Medi-Cal.

What has it been, something like 15 years so far. Last I heard, it'll be another 10 years with only being a few billion over budget. Guaranteed that means at least 20 years and many billions over budget.
