By the end of her life, who are the "Four Green Fields" to the "woman?"

I am thinking that by the end of her life the woman who is quoted in this song, are no longer, parcels of land, but instead are four deceased sons.

Even before I was in Elementary School I would sing along with "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem."

They even taught me some "poetry."
"Up the long ladder and down the short rope......
I could go on but it is perhaps better that I not do so........

Can you imagine the Theological.... ideological...... spiritual..... crisis that I had once I realized that dad's ancestors were from Northern Ireland and Scotland......
and were not exactly the same "Irish" as my mom's people who apparently came from County Tipperary........
a few years before 1800?

The four Provinces of Ireland; four provinces of Ireland: Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster.

"Ulster" is still in bondage; part of the UK.

I listened to The Clancy's music as a kid and went to their Concert in Brisbane circa 1976. They were Brothers plus Tommy Makem. I met Tommy's family in Goondiwindi in Queenslad during the early 90s. He went there whenever he was touring Oz, Fantastic live as their songs are damn fantastic.(Just Liam and Tommy Makem in 1976).
