While the cities may hire and pay for police salaries, they do not control investigations, charging decisions, or criminal justice. Crime is entirely a state and federal matter. This bulllshit of blaming Democratic city government for levels of crime or poverty in their cities is yet another example of Republicans making a mess and then blaming Democrats for it.

Oakland has been a violent mess since, at least, the early seventies. When I was stationed in San Francisco we weren’t allowed to go to either the Oakland Army Depot or the Army Post Office there in uniform to pick up confiscated weapons, drugs or explosives without being openly armed. We used to destroy all three on our demolition range. Unless it was something unusual the Army didn’t bother to prosecute soldiers sending weapons or explosives home. We used to destroy at least a dozen AK-47s every month and many things like pencil flares and star clusters and switchblade knives as well.
