Was it a showboat stunt for a 56 year old Army general with a cane and a .45 to storm the beaches with the first wave on D.Day? It wasn't a general's job to "rally the troops" and he probably was in the way while Soldiers were trying to get a foothold. He was recommended for a DSC which was upgraded to a MOH after he died from a heart attack.

While one can argue if its a stunt both he and Cota were instrumental in getting their people off the beach.
