It might have been a mistake for the defense to pick a trial by judge. It seems that he might have deliberated about ten minutes to find the monster fuilty of a dozen charges related to the rape and murder of a young woman. Capital punishment is still legal in Georgia.

This was what the prosecution stipulated. Usually it is because if the sentencing would include the possibility of the death penalty jurors now tend to be overly concerned and talk themselves out of a conviction. It is sad but a fact of life, and juries now don't want to convict anyone of anything. This may have been a result of the hoodlem demanding a bench trial, no jury. I suspect that was a condition of the judge and lawyers.

Hard to square with my prolife beliefs. I know, I know, innocent vs evil. Also too many many exonerated after decades on death row because they got shafted at the trial (liars ...).

Wanting to see a murderer put to death for his crimes shouldn't conflict with your pro-life beliefs. It doesn't have to be an either or situation, it can be a spectrum.

Those who have no respect or regard for the lives and rights of others are not in the same category of the unborn. Wishing to protect the lives of the unborn should not conflict with you wanting or believing that a person who so callously took the life of this young lady deserves to forfeit his life as punishment for his crimes, IMHO.
