do you know this custom?

On Palm Sunday there are palm branches brought to church to get blessed.

in countries where there are no palm trees, some other plants are used.

in our region we use small holly trees.

I always liked seeing how important that palm leaf was to my mother-in-law when she got home after Palm Sunday Mass.

I was thrilled to come home with that palm leaf after my first Palm Sunday Mass, and to stick it behind the crucifix on my living room wall.

The Altar Society -- women who serve our church -- get the task of separating and sorting the palm leaves on the Friday before Palm Sunday, to make sure none have gone bad or broken, before Father blessed them. Important part of my church life, being part of Altar Society.

Thanks for bringing this up.

I still have the palm leaf from two years ago. Since it's blessed, I'm not sure what to do with it. As far as I know, Father doesn't burn the leaves from last year's Palm Sunday to use for the ashes on Ash Wednesday.
