They allowed for other people to settle on their lands - via trade&war agreements, selling of land, and simply being forcefully conquered in certain areas, from the 16th century onward, just as any other country or continent on the planet.

Africa had not developed a central power that would have allowed for a larger hegemonic state. Neither had Europe before the 14th century. That's why the Huns and later the Mongols could overrun, conquer and large swath of Western and Eastern Europe., just as the Arabs who held almost 80% of the Iberian peninsula.

England was a nobody in the 14th century - neither was France nor Spain, or Germany, not even to mention Portugal. They were factually fighting constantly amongst themselves and more importantly warring constantly within their own territories. They had however invented guns and artillery - and thus developed improved war tactics.

By the 15th century the Europeans had established 4-5 "main-players" - constantly still waging war with each other, but had not succeeded to establish a single dominating hegemonic power. Then Portugal, Spain, England explored seaways to gain new trading places, whilst trying to find ways to take control over the spice&silk trade that was controlled by the Arabs.

Thus taking them along the African coast - and finding easy accessible markets. They found out that there was no main players but hundreds of individual tribes, constantly fighting each other and with no matching military equipment and tactical skill that posed a serious threat to them. They found the same "fertile" grounds in Asia and the Americas, aka-colonialism started to take place.

The Europeans used tribal factions to gain alliances (for certain periods) just as they had done for millennials in Europe. Then guiding the destruction of the main-players and effectively disabling the capability for any local ethnicity to further develop by themselves. The next step was enslaving entire regions - with the help of local chieftains or kings, who themselves had used slavery to maintain or expand their own powers.

Mostly after WW2 - these colonies had been "granted" independence, whilst it's leaders had been educated by their former colonial masters. Thus also instilling "Patriotism" and "Nationalism" into those revolutionary/independence leaders.

So patriotism and nationalism of the local populace and their leaders lead to wars against each other (in vast majority due to borders drawn by their former colonial masters) or resulting into independence movements/wars against e.g. SWA (controlled by the RSA) or an absolute minority government such as in Rhodesia.

Today they are proud or even extremely proud about their independence - and hate/dislike Europeans for what they did to them for centuries. That the Europeans had build hospitals, infrastructure, some schools or telegraph-lines to better exploit their colonies sure, - should they thank them for it??? Aside from that the local populace is at many times disappointed about their "own" government - just as in western countries. See your clip about Rhodesia, aka Zimbabwe which means in no way that they would be willing to tolerate a minority government headed by Europeans.

As for the former RSA, I have my own thoughts and conviction.
