The Buffalo Bills have fired head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott is the third long-tenured NFL head coach fired in the last two weeks since the 2025 NFL season ended, joining John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin.

The Bills have not been to a Super Bowl under McDermott despite having an MVP quarterback and a solid roster for years. Multiple reports have general manager Brandon Beane staying on to lead the next head coach search.

Darn, I was not expecting that!

I expected it.
Some NFL organizations aren't satisfied unless they win championships.
Buffalo is going to have to do some trades or have some losing seasons to build their roster into a champion.
It might take 3 or 4 seasons of high draft positions to put them in the spot to pick key players ala New England.
They also need to keep teams from poaching their positional coaches.
Buffalo has the horses on offense....but not so much on defense.

They most likely will promote their offensive coordinator to head coach.

Don’t you wish that evil on me Ricky Bobby!

Joe Brady is a horrible OC. He’s part of the problem. I would hate it if he comes back as OC let alone head coach.

I didn't see that coming either.
Here's the deal:
Yes, it's disappointing they haven't made it to the Super Bowl with arguably the best quarterback in football.
But it's the front office that's responsible for not providing Josh Allen with more tools on both sides of the ball to get to the next level.
The head coach always gets the blame, though. That's the way it works.
We'll see who replaces McDermott and see if he does any better. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work out the way ownership wants.

I bet they will get some young "wonderkinder" that is slightly younger than the older players which is the way things are going these days.

I think it's the 10th head coach that has been fired this season.

AI Overview

The Buffalo Bills have
never won a Super Bowl, despite famously appearing in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1991 to 1994, losing all of them. Their last Super Bowl appearance was Super Bowl XXVIII in January 1994, where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys.
Key Facts:
  • Super Bowl Losses: 0-4.
  • Last Appearance: January 30, 1994 (Super Bowl XXVIII).
  • Other Championships: They won two AFL Championships in 1964 and 1965 before the AFL-NFL merger.

It is the tenth.
And I agree it will probably be a younger coordinator because the NFL is a fad league and they all love young coaches now.

Given the past five years, I am not really surprised by this.

The hype around the offensive weapons and they cannot make it to the big dance. For five years they get to the division title, and then choke faster than Waltz on a 9 incher.

I'm wondering if the Vegas oddsmakers have a hand in this. The botched call by the Refs in the divisional round caused the entire crew to be suspended by the league after McDermott screamed holy hell to Tim Pegula over it. My theory is that the Bills are a direct threat to the betting establishment.

I understand that they’re not happy with losing in the playoffs again, but was the coach really the issue?

More importantly, who is out there who would be a coach upgrade?

That's always the question. And it's rarely answered in the affirmative.

McDermott was highly respected by his players and I would not be surprised if he lands another head coaching position.

that was a surprise, he did everything right except win it all which is not that easy to do

Thinking the same.

What's interesting is that they waited until Monday to do it. I think watching NE advance with a second year QB was the final, final, final straw.

We spent 20 years with the Patriots and their success. No more for a while. In fact, it is tiresome and laughable for most of the league.

Yeah well, IMO, McDermott was not in the Bill's top ten list of problems. Other than Allen and a few other guys, they lacked in many areas, but more to the point, he had a better record than Mike Tomlin and he came within an inch of winning the Divisional Round!

Many argue that the Bills should have won that Divisional Game and that it all came down to a few questionable calls made by the Referees.

I bet the Bills live to regret firing him, he is not their problem.

The Bills got robbed. They should have won that game but got jobbed by a questionable call.
But I think they are a victim of their own success. The Bills have been good for so long that they can't pick the best players.
The NFL draft rewards mediocrity and punishes success.
Teams like Seattle and New England have had a few lousy seasons that have put them in a position to build their roster thru the draft, and they're owners know what they're doing. Can't say the same about the Bills.

The problem is that the NFL can never name what a catch is. It varies from game to game. This was a catch but that one wasn't. Nothing is black & white in the NFL, everything to them is fuzzy logic like quantum theory. One time, it is a clean defense, other time, it is pass interference--- how can a defender defend when he doesn't know how he can stop offensive players or tackle QBs? It isn't so much that the calls are wrong, but more that they are not applied consistently, and the more advanced and scientific the analysis, the more subjective the penalty calling has become.

It is a form of DEI. Like any good Leftist organization, they punish you for succeeding unless you manage to punch through to winning a Super Bowl anyway. As a Steeler fan, I can't remember the last time the Steelers picked better than 20th in the draft.

Or the Steelers. But if I had to put a pin in why the Bills have not won a Championship, I would not be pointing my finger at McDermott. All of these coach firings may end up having the opposite effect of making it harder, not easier to find a good coach replacement.

The way you build a Super Bowl Championship team is by building your offensive and defensive lines before you start picking your skill players.
You also need to do all of this inside 5 years before your players start renegotiating their contracts.
If you are lucky, and most of your players don't get injured, you can get good production out of them under their rookie contracts.
Every good team stockpiled draft picks thru trades.
They all ended up vastly improving their team in a short period. Every team except the Jets and the browns....who can't seem to find a decent QB.
