All Slavic languages are pretty archaic, and, therefore, very close to each other. Actually, Russian (including Ukrainian and Belorussian), Polish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovak, Czech languages more close to each other than, say, different German dialects.

I don't know if archaic, but they are somewhat close, and the Germanic languages too, except for English. And the Romance languages.

Dutch is actually like a dialect of German and in large part understandable. Swiss German sounds like a different language, but it's probably still understandable to a degree.

Just English turned out that it's not mutually understandable much with any other language.

Some of those meanings have changed over time or in different places. 'Grad" can also mean castle, and there are even more cities with that name.

"Kraj" means region, or border, or land.

There was more or less independent Pskov Republic between 1348 (when it became independent from Novgorod) and 1399 (when it became dependent from Moscow).
Geographically Pskov, Moscow and Novgorod (as well as many other Russian states) were part of Europe. Culturally and linguistically, Pskov (as well as Moscow, Novgorod and significant part of Lithuania) was (and still is) a part of Russia.
