B-17 with exotic cammo

Thanks for that..any idea what the purpose was? Was it a test to see if that style would work?

That is horrible. A very sad fate for an honorable B-17

It's called an assembly ship. They used them to assemble large bombing formations. It was basically a point of reference. They never flew all the way to the target.

Swagger got it right. These craft were "War Weary" designated and used as assembly aircraft as Swagger said. This one, the "Spotted Cow" AKA "Speckled Hen" was formerly "Patches II" of the 547th Bomb Squadron, 384th Bomb Group.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.

I have seen a couple of B-24's (including one that had flashing lights on the sides!), but this is the first B-17 I saw painted as an assembly ship.

The title of the thread is kinda misleading.

Camouflage is used to try and hide an object.

Whereas, the paint job on assembly aircraft was for maximum visibility. .....

Not all camouflauge looks like camouflage...
