I read "Killing Hitler: The Plots, The Assassins, and the Dictator Who Cheated Death" by Roger Moorhouse and was stunned at the desperation of many people to do him in. Twenty attempts are discussed in the book (I believe there were more than 42 KNOWN attempts), all by Germans.
