Where I live in south east Louisiana, AT&T's cell service is dismal at best. I used to have it for years. I had scratchy signals and dropped calls in places like my house or where I work or pretty much everywhere including in the middle of the city. And everyone I know with AT&T down here has similar problems. I switch to Verizon - it costs a little more - but its worth it because it actually works. Dropped calls are a rarity now and if the signal is coming through poorly the answer is either "yes" or "hhhhhhhhhhhhhh" when I ask the other caller if they have AT&T.

How on Earth does AT&T stay in business down here with such shoddy performance - and does AT&T suck this bad v. Verizon where you live?

I've held on to my Verizon cell service like it was made of gold. AT&T has a monopoly on land lines where I live and AT&T is horrible. My bills got so out of hand that I finally switched to Comcast which is not the greatest but at least my phone/internet bills are more reasonable. My major complaint with Comcast is Xfinity - I don't care for all that stuff. When I switched from AT&T to Comcast I had to end up taking AT&T to the TN consumer protection agency to make AT&T repay me monies they continued to collect from me AFTER the switch. It was sort of a shock, but I actually had a check in my hand in less than two weeks!

I've never had any problems with Verizon service or signals.

Everyone complains about AT&T on the west coast, too. I've heard New Yorkers complain.

Check out jdpower.com. They compare carriers in your area.

Sooo...the wife has a $50 month T-Mobile phone with dedicated service which sucks as soon as you get outside a major city or away from an interstate highway. I have a no-contract Trac phone that costs me about $8 month and the service is always better. They do it by buying lower rate 2nd class spare capacity from all the majors and surfing all of their towers for connections. For voice, e-mail, or texting, I can connect just about anywhere for less. Works OK for me because I do not use the cell towers to stream data or download giant internet graphics.
