the end of the war to end all wars.

were that only true.

Our family came to America post civil war, but members have defended this country in every conflict since.
Tried to join the Marines in my early 20's. Recruiter overslept on first try. Second try we were early, he handed me off to the desk jockies, they forgot I was there, third time can't remember what happened but I got the impression I wasn't supposed to be a Marine.

Sounds par for recruiting, LOL. I tried to enlist in the Army at 16 and, obviously, was refused. Insulted, I showed them and joined the Marine Corps on my 17th birthday. LOL

When I was a kid we called it "Decoration Day". Veterans Day is the Country's apology for spitting on Vietnam Vets and shitting on the Flag.
You are confusing Veteran's Day with Memorial Day. Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day in 1967 and designated the last Monday in May in 1968. Armistice Day has been a commemoration of the WWI armistice signing at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. It was designated Veterans Day to honor all veterans by congressional action in 1954.

Memorial Day, initially referred to as Decoration Day, was observed by many communities after the Civil War, when the nation suffered more than 620,000 military deaths, roughly 2 percent of the total population at the time.
