The sound and the fury of divisiveness that characterizes the increasingly bifurcated duopoly is driving Americans to disaffiliate.

Divested of party loyalty, independent voters focus on values and issues, and their political influence is rising.

... The war polls even worse with independents, who disapprove by an average margin of 70 percent to 30 percent. Those voters are also more likely to cite “affordability” as a primary concern, creating a political pitfall for the administration as the war drives up gas prices and threatens to stoke inflation.
Trump's net approval of -20 for handling the situation in Iran represents a drop from last week's poll. Then, 39% of Americans approved of how Trump was handling Iran and 52% disapproved — a net approval of -13.
The decline in approval of Trump's handling of Iran is almost entirely among Independents. Almost all Democrats disapprove of how Trump is handling Iran, and almost all Republicans approve; neither number changed much from week to week. But opinion among Independents of how Trump's handling Iran fell to 24% approve / 63% disapprove (-39 net) this week from 30% approve / 53% disapprove last week (-23 net).

Gen Z are most jaded and are ripe for an Independent. Many of them viewed Trump as this.

We like to laugh at Gen Z but in terms of objective knowledge and persuasive communication, for their relative age they are leap years ahead of the generations that came before them. They may not know how to screw in a lightbulb but they question everything and view politicians largely with distrust.

republican party is increasing
Current data shows that while the
Republican Party has seen significant increases in specific areas like voter registration and support among certain demographics, its overall national lead in party affiliation has recently fluctuated.
Gallup News +2

Key Areas of Increase
  • Voter Registration: Republicans have made major gains in voter registration across 30 states, adding 2.4 million voters between 2020 and 2024, while Democrats lost 2.1 million.
    • In Florida, the GOP now holds a registration lead of over 1 million voters, a 10-point advantage over Democrats.
    • Significant registration gains have also been noted in battleground states like North Carolina and
      Pennsylvania
      .
  • Demographic Shifts: The party has seen rising support among:
    • Young Men: Support among young men surged from 35% to 48% over a seven-year period.
    • Hispanic Voters: Identification increased from 27% to 36% since 2021.
    • Black Americans: A smaller but notable increase from 12% to 17%.
  • Voter Confidence & Satisfaction: Republican satisfaction with the state of the nation saw a record 58-point surge in early 2025 following the presidential transition. Additionally, voters increasingly trust Republicans over Democrats to handle issues like immigration and the economy

Not relevance, but are representing a smaller group of the population. The independence and their views no longer have a place in the two major Parties due to only catering to the fringe, foreign and wealthy interest.

That is why in states where you have to register by party affiliation to vote in primaries the results in the general election are often skewed.

Can you even fathom what the political landscape would be like if Independents had their own party/slate of hopefuls?

We already do and they never win

That is counter to the whole concept of the middle "independent"

Well, let's face it, the Independent voter has not had a lot to choose from of late.

I was fine with Trump but I'd not piss on my 6th district gop congress critter if his teeth were on fire. I'd never vote for a dem so I just leave that space blank every two years.

The problem is our voting system is designed for a two party setup, especially at the federal level.
