The differences in rulings of some defendents compared to others in the U.S is astounding. Some might suggest political. One of the largest companies in the world violating citizens rights pays in comparison to other rulings a measly $95M penalty for spying on consumers without their knowledge while they have made hundreds of billions of dollars in profits. It equates to $20 a person if they choose to pursue. The free market doesn't include spying on citizens without a warrant. I've always wondered if google's AI assistant does the same thing. It's ALWAYS listening for you to say "ok google" but that means it's ALWAYS LISTENING to you .

What they are paying the fine for is someone within Apple RECORDED conversations people were having without their consent or knowledge.
BIG difference than just listening/waiting to hear "hey Siri"

Not really, both are recording without consent. Because if it's listening it's recording, somewhere.

A year or two ago I talked some sense into someone who didn't believe Siri was eavesdropping on us. I asked her how Siri knew someone was saying, "Hey Siri" unless Siri was constantly listening all the time to see if someone said, "Hey Siri". She didn't have an answer to my question but seemed to get my point that Siri was indeed eavesdropping on all of us, all the time.
