“Trump math” is wild. He’s bragging that Thanksgiving dinner is 25% cheaper because Walmart put out a promo basket… that has about half the items of last year’s basket, smaller quantities, and cheaper substitutions, and then he waves that around like it’s an official economic indicator.
It’s like claiming rent is down 25% because you moved from a two-bedroom to a broom closet and started sharing the bathroom. Overall food prices are still up year-over-year and turkey prices are higher, but sure, cut the pies, sides, and name brands, then shout “AFFORDABILITY ISSUE IS DEAD!” and hope nobody notices the missing food.

“But the baskets differ significantly. For example, this year's includes just 15 items compared to last year's 29. It is missing many dessert items, including a pecan pie, mini marshmallows and muffin mix, as well as savory items such as sweet potatoes, yellow onions and celery stalks.”

FACT FOCUS: Trump says Thanksgiving dinner will cost 25% less this year. His numbers are misleading
With Thanksgiving less than three weeks away, the question of how much this year’s turkey and trimmings will cost looms large, especially with grocery prices 2.7% higher than they were in 2024
