For the longest time I thought that I had a form of Dyslexia because I could not concentrate on long paragraphs or I couldn't remember a long list of directions, but I just found out tonight that the doctor who evaluated me as a child was probably wrong.

I've always had trouble listening, not being distracted, and following directions and have had racing intrusive thoughts, but I always thought that there was something wrong with me and that I needed to try harder.

It turns out that since I'm not hyperactive, nobody thought that I had ADHD, but I'm going to see if I can get an appointment for a mental health center near me to see if I can possibly be reevaluated since I have most of the symptoms, it just hurts me that all these years people were holding things against me that I can't always control and because of my pediatrician I thought that it was all my fault. 😞

No, back in my day ifin' you didn't behave and do as you were told you gotz yer azz paddled.

Attention deficit is a made up "disorder" so they can medicate you.

I take several meds for my heart...I know what each one of them is supposed to do and I have rejected several against doctors orders.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

KNOW WHAT THE MEDS ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!

The last time I had a doctor tell me "keep taking them and HANG IN THERE"...I ended up needing hernia surgery!

The "doctor" didn't suffer the pain or expense...I DID!

Yeah, I take several heart meds too. Some doctor's assistant wants to put me on blood thinners because of a short arrythmia incident. I said no.

I'm on xarelto...I don't like it but from what I've learned and what I've been thru...it's best that I continue taking it.

But they gave me lisinopril which cause me a bad cough...the cough gave me a hernia :(

I blame myself! I knew it gave me a bad cough...I talked to the doc about it...she told me "hang in there".

Still kicking myself for that one!

Thunk of the doctors as trusted advisors. They advise you...but YOU make the final decision!

The doc doesn't live with the pain or expense...YOU DO!

They want me to take Eloquis (or something like that). I'm already on Metoprolol (beta blocker).

The Internet is a big help too. Good for double checking, confirmation, info on the chemical you're consuming, what they do...etc.

I'm on metoprolol as well...she strongly suggested eloqis/jardiance... and I DID MY HOMEWORK and said "no".

But metoprolol has done me well for 5 plus years...I'll stick with that.

Another one is the dosage.

I can handle a half a tablet of losartan..a full tablet and I am so dizzy I wonder if I'm having a stroke.

I have actually looked in the mirror and sang "happy birthday" to make sure both sides of my face are working.

Doctor wanted me to take 2-3 tablets per day.

I told her "NO ******* WAY"! Half a tablet is the best I can do. I tried!

Still taking half a tablet.

What did you find wrong with eloqis/jardiance? You can PM me if you want.

Medication can help if you use it to develope structure in areas of your daily life where you struggle. The key to using medication is to allow you to focus on the things you don't want to do but need to do. Set realistic goals on making small lifestyle changes and simplify whatever you can.

You know what? Forget it. Most everybody thinks that I'm making this up anyways.

Here's the thing, I got advice from my mother about it and she told me that it isn't a made-up disorder, but whether or not I have it doesn't matter as ADHD people aren't all that different from other people where they can still learn how to control their behavior and it isn't worth being evaluated again because being put on medication is like you were basically saying,.. unnecessary.

I looked up ADHD. It seems it can include many symptoms such as being inattentive, distracted, trouble being still, trouble concentrating and focusing just to name a few. Also, I read that a diagnosis should include looking at the brain as well as the body. I think dyslexia is a symptom as well which I have always thought I have. When reading a book, my mind wanders as I read the words. I find it helpful to at least mouth the words as I read them or read out loud. I have to read technical stuff at least 3 times. Writing, however, is not a problem for me for some reason.

In my schooldays - no one was diagnosed or treated for ADHD, but inattentiveness was cured and treated with a ruler or cane.
The only issue we had (those days AFAIK more or less unknown) was an autistic kid - he turned his notebook upside down and wrote from right to left, rotating it backwards everything looked as it should - it amazed me.

The poor fellow got caned and whacked by a certain teacher on an almost daily basis - until (I was around 11-12 years old) when I stepped between the teacher and him - telling the teacher to stop beating the guy. Two month later his mother translated him to another school.
