West Australians could get a lethal injection within 10 days of seeking their voluntary assisted death if the State emulates Victorian euthanasia laws that Premier Mark McGowan views as a worthy “template” for WA.
The Federal president of the Australian doctors’ lobby, Michael Gannon, yesterday cautioned his home State against following Victoria, which he said was on the path to euthanising people with mental illness, dementia and chronic disease.
Victoria is on the cusp of passing only the second voluntary euthanasia laws in Australian history. The first euthanasia laws were passed in the Northern Territory but were struck down by the Commonwealth in the mid-1990s.
The Bill that passed Victoria’s Upper House last week has sparked the nation’s next major social debate after same-sex marriage, with Greens Federal leader Richard Di Natale declaring he would pursue Federal euthanasia laws next year.
A WA parliamentary committee is investigating end-of-life choices, with Mr McGowan predicting conscience vote of MPs next year or 2019. “It’s a momentous issue,” he told The West Australian. “The good thing about what’s happened in Victoria is it gives a potential template and it allows people to see how it works in the lead-up to WA voting on the issue.
