Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one. - Charles Mackay, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, 1841
That's a great book, by the way. Well worth taking the time to read.
After 9/11, America lost its collective mind, especially on the right. Remember the obsession with flag pins?
The crescendo kept rising until the madness of that crowd reached its climax on January 6, 2021.
Another applicable quote is from Edmund Burke. "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing."
We saw way too many cowardly Republicans shrink from their responsibility to confront a dictator wannabe and put a stop to this madness. They knew what was happening is insane, yet they did nothing. History will judge them very harshly.
We saw what I call the Jacobinization of the Republican Party taking over the narrative. Each passing month demanded more and more insane obedience to the cause. If you didn't follow, you were a RINO.
Some had the courage to stand up right from the beginning, and all of them were forced out of office. But history will judge them very kindly.
Now, finally, more and more Republicans are taking a stand. Hopefully, it isn't too late.
I wonder when the balance will shift and the sane will have enough spine to collectively stand against the fanatics and everyone starts calling the Jacobins RINOs.
Today, we saw that shift beginning to take shape. 22 Republicans of disparate beliefs came together to face down one of the biggest jackals in the House.
It is still possible the Jacobins can drive our democracy off a cliff. Things are very fragile right now. Everyone in America is at each other's throats.
Someone wants us divided, and it isn't Trump. He is simply their useful idiot.
But I felt a flicker of hope when I saw the makeup of the group stopping Gym Jordan.
Some are from safe deep red districts. Some are from tossup districts. Some are from high risk districts.
Some are moderates. One is a member of the Freedom Caucus!
Many of the House Appropriations Committee are among the 22. They obviously don't like the jackals attempting to hijack their responsibilities.
Many of them have received death threats, and I'm glad. They are finally on the receiving end of the madness they have been sanctioning with their silence. Now they are experiencing firsthand the monsters they allowed to grow in their wombs.
Yet, for once, they are not backing down. Good on them!
Wakey wakey, Republicans!
