Miracle on Ice (1980) USA-USSR memory nod to what makes sports and media so incompletely art. Happy Holidays! Thanks for viewing,

Well, in 1980, the USA boasted solid ambitions and good play on the ice for hockey fanfare heading into the Winter Games to challenge the simply dominating Soviets who'd become the clear faves, perhaps only challenged by Czechoslovakia, who, oddly enough, were shocked by the Americans. The USA team, coached by Herb Brooks (great figure in sports record), knew his team was an underdog-force and ultimately marshaled with a cool stern grit past the dominant USSR team and eventually saw his team outshine Finland to grab the gold medal. This was a great moment during the otherwise eerie Cold War era.

Herb's American side would face USSR ice-hockey in the medal round before reaching Finland before upsetting Czechoslovakia (wow). Well, the 3rd (final period) saw the machine-like swift Soviets command their 3-2 lead before the Brooks-coached USA-team choreographed quick-and-thoughtful offense motions to create a 2-0 period-streak that iced their final 4-3 triumph. For the Cold War, this was, for many sports fans and writers alike, as significant as the Fischer-Spassky chess epic of 1972 between USA-USSR (sure). Today's Russian sports fans are found around, on social media, in this time of newfound Russia intrigue/complexity (i.e., Russia-Ukraine War), and that made that 1980 gem even more symbolic (IMO) of Earthling beauty-magic.

This Xmas, I might get my nieces a pretty good Cold War chess film (Pawn Sacrifice, Ed Zwick) and think back (on YouTube!) on what made the Miracle-on-Ice of 1980 something of a cinema expression for sovereignty/chirp cleats (ha).

I decided to make this little 1980 ice-hockey sports (pseudo-politics) post of relevance for modern times thinking of what makes me channel-shift between CNN and ESPN for the holidays, and I'm enjoying some Thanksgiving leftovers still feeling giddy about my YouTube view of that 1980 USA-USSR ice-hockey masterpiece (ha).

Sports is about performance and cheer (and coaches/teams/nations); and it can be about rivalries for theater, and this 1980 hockey tale was about national rivalry turned into Earthling lyrics (for all). Besides, Duke-UNC is getting old, friends (ha).

“Miracle” will always be one of my favorite movies of all time. My grandfather knew Herb Brooks when he was coaching University of Minnesota hockey.
