I don't know what kind of flavors you and the man enjoy or what is available at your local stores so i'll shoot from the hip. If you like dry reds try to find Jeunette Rouge from Les Bourgoouis here in Missouri. It's a semi-dry table wine that is not too overpowering. A Shiraz is good if you like something a bit stronger. A Cab Sauvignon will probably be stronger in flavor than both previous mentioned. But, to be honest, when in doubt go for a nice 12 dollar bottle of merlot. It's the easiest to find something pleasant to the pallate in a generic fashion. Check out Beaulieu Vinyard bottles. I've had a lot of good wines from them while staying on the cheaper side of wine consumption. I'm a big fan of the merlot verietals they offer.
