Gunman Opens Fire at Oregon Community College, Killing 7
October 1, 2015 | - A gunman opened fire at an Oregon community college Thursday, killing at least seven people and wounding 20, authorities said.
The shooting happened at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. The local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the school. It later tweeted that there were "multiple casualties" but did not elaborate. State police Lt. Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that seven to 10 people were dead and at least 20 others hurt. A photographer for the Roseburg News-Review newspaper said he saw people being loaded into multiple ambulances and taken to the local hospital. Andrea Zielinski, a spokeswoman for Douglas County Sheriff's office, told The Associated Press: "There's no more threat." Zielinski would not say whether a suspect was apprehended or dead.

The school has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the college was not immediately returned. State police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking details. The sheriff's office reported on Twitter that it received a call about the shooting at 10:38 a.m. Students and faculty members were being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, the sheriff's office said.

A spokeswoman for the Oregon department that oversees community colleges in the state said she had not received any detailed information about the shooting. "It's extremely concerning and sad," said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The rural town of Roseburg lies west of the Cascade Mountains in an area where the timber industry has struggled. In recent years, officials have tried to promote the region as a tourist destination for vineyards and outdoor activities.

One student, Kortney Moore, 18, told News Review-Today that she was in her writing class in Snyder Hall when a single shot came through a window. Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head, apparently after the gunman came into the classroom. At that point, Moore told the newspaper, the shooter ordered everyone to get on the ground. The shooter then asked people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing, Moore said..

A witness at the scene in Roseburg said the male shooter was shot by police and was acting alone, according The Register-Guard of Eugene. The report could not be immediately confirmed. Mercy Medical Center, a hospital in Roseburg, said it had received nine patients and expected three more. Roseburg Police Sgt. Aaron Dunbar told USA TODAY that the incident was contained to one classroom on the sprawling campus.

Oregon college gunman asked for victims' religion before shooting
1 Oct.`15 - A gunman opened fire at a community college in southern Oregon on Thursday, killing 13 people and wounding some 20 others before he was shot to death by police, state and county officials said, in the latest mass killing to rock a U.S. school.
There were conflicting reports on the number of dead and wounded in the shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, which began shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time. The state's attorney general, Ellen Rosenblum, told the local NBC affiliate that 13 people had been slain, 20 wounded and the shooter was killed. Rosenblum's office did not return calls seeking comment. Governor Kate Brown said the suspect was a 20-year-old man but he was not identified further by authorities. CNN reported that four guns belonging to the shooter were recovered from the scene.

The massacre is the latest in a series of mass shootings at U.S. college campuses, movie theaters, military bases and churches in recent years. The killings have fueled demands for more gun control in the United States, where ownership of firearms is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and better care for the mentally ill. Kortney Moore, 18, told the local News Review newspaper that she was in her writing class in Snyder Hall when a gunshot came through the window and struck her teacher in the head. Moore said the gunman told people to get on the ground, then asked them to stand up and state their religion before he started shooting.

Student Cassandra Welding told CNN that she heard 35 to 40 shots. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the gunman was slain in an exchange of gunfire with police officers. "It's been a terrible day," Hanlin said. The sheriff did not say how many people had been slain or wounded at the college in Roseburg, a city of about 20,000 people some 260 miles south of Portland. "This is a peaceful community," he said. "We have our share of crime like any community but certainly this is a shock to have this level of a crime." CNN reported that among the wounded was a female who had been shot in the chest. The Oregonian said that at least six patients were critically injured in the shooting, citing an official with Life Flight.

Shootings in our malls, more guns are the answer, shootings in our grade schools, more guns are the answer, shootings in our colleges, more guns needed.

Maybe something wrong with this formula?
