ATLANTA (AP) — Leaders of an Atlanta museum want the space focused on modern and historic civil rights to contribute to a national push to ensure LGBT rights, particularly in southern states.
Wednesday marks the formal launch of the LGBT Institute, housed at the Center for Civil and Human Rights. The museum opened in June 2014. The space includes galleries on LGBT issues, but officials say they're following through on calls to do more.
Ryan Roemerman of the LGBT Institute says the project will organize events and help connect groups already working on LGBT issues. He also hopes to partner on research with universities.
Organizers plan to focus on education and employment, public health and wellness, and criminal justice and safety. They say the effort will include people of all gender or sexual identities.
