Gender roles are actually good. His gender role involves the traditional things like working, paying for everything, and handyman stuff. It also includes the traditional female roles like childcare, cooking, housework, and caring for everyone's health and safety. Her role is to pick up as much or little slack as she wants. He can trust that she'll handle what she decides to do. Whatever she decides not to do is on him. Whatever she says she'll do and doesn't is on him. Keeping the relationship working is on him. He's the one ultimately responsible.
