It has only been two elections since GW Bush's two terms; so, I wouldn't jump to this conclusion just yet. However, you may be right if the GOP doesn't get with the rest of the nation on a number of big issues -- immigration, gay rights, women's issues.

A populist incumbent winning a razor-thin election is no death knell to the opposition. The Republicans stand about where the Democrats were in 2004. A lame-duck president whose accomplishments are very limited does not bode well for Democrats in 2016, unless there is an unlikely and significant change of fortune.

Besides, with Obama out of the picture voter participation will collapse with certain demographics unless the Democrats decide to run someone like Sharpton.
