Why does someone join a political party?

Not a clue.

I never have.

That's what I figured.

Political parties exist to consolidate power. So a politician may join one to get his thrust organized. Even if it's not the one he was with before running for office. Ray Nagin for example. Frank Rizzo for another.

In no case does their personality "change" when they do that.

Sometimes they're already in office and they switch after reading the tea leaves to find out what will work, when the previous one won't. The sheriff in my town ran for re-election as a Republican. After winning the office as a Democrat. Same guy, didn't change. Arlen Specter started out Democrat, then went Republican for a long time, then went back to Democrat.

Lincoln Chafee. Trent Lott.

Same guys, before and after. Same personalities.

Still others stay with whatever originally brought them to the dance. just as a traditional thing.. Zell Miller is a Democrat to this day, and says he will be until he dies. George Wallace did too, even though he floated an offer to Goldwater to switch in order to be Goldwater's running mate. Just because he (Wallace) thought it would work at the time.

Then there are voters. In many states you have to be registered with a political party in order to cast a vote in that party's primary if you want a say in who that party stands as a candidate. I recall Lush Rimjob exhorting his listener to do just that, several times. In that case it was to undermine a particular candidate. Those who did so experienced no personality change once they made it official.

Or for other practical reasons: I had a GF --- young single Jewish schoolteacher--- who registered Republican, she explained, solely because it would give her a voice in her all-Republican city council. She too was the same girl before and after she did that. Amazingly --- no personality change there either.
