Most people around the world I know do think our far right conservatives are nuts and also scary. And at the same time they think most America liberals are wimps for not standing up to the far right wackos.
I have family in New Zealand and I'd care to guess they know more about America, American politics and America in general that many Americans. That also goes for friends of mine in Europe.
I think it helps that they are subjected to the over-abundant highly partisan media outlets we have in America who basically feed Americans partisan propaganda 24/7.

On occasion, I post on the MSN UK Message Boards. I think some people here think the Brits think the US is the cat's meow. They think we're frikken nuts and for the most part don't like the far right Americans who post on their boards. And many just don't like Americans period. I'm not saying there aren't conservatives on those boards but the UK's conservatives would be for the most part, classified as liberals on these boards.!
