Why not a federal sales tax?

You think you deserve the other guy's stuff.

We get that.

Not only did I never say that, but you seem to have failed to understand the point of my post. I was pointing out a failing of your reasoning. The fact that your response does nothing to add any credence to your position, and only serves to insult me on a personal level, is yet another failing.

That which is 'fair' is understood by people by about kindergarten.

Using force of gubmint to steal from some to lavish benevolence on others in exchange for votes is not only unfair, it is immoral.

So go pound salt up your ass.

We could do that if we replace the income and corporate tax with it. Would tax the buying of goods instead of income. Maybe fairer?

Such a sales tax would have to be incredibly high. Since the rich spend a comparatively small part of their income on such purchases the burden would fall, with repressive heaviness, on those who make less money.

Geez another tax...
Don't these guys get it yet...
Haven't you seen this.

T TAXED
E ENOUGH
A ALREADY

Redo the tax code already...simplify it come up with something that is truly fair for all.
Until that is done the well to do is already paying their "fair" share....

fair flat tax, no exceptions, no exemptions, no excuses.

I am not talking about a huge sales tax, just 1 or 2 percent.

I know, people hate taxes, but whether or not you want a well oiled war machine, or you want to make sure the poor are fed you have to make money to do so. Just the operations of our government has increased to such an extent that a sales or commerce tax would really help us pay the bills.

Good things:

This would be a fair tax. Everyone pays it. If you consume more, then you pay more. If you are frugal then you pay less. Wasteful people who purchase expensive name brands or purchase things like wasteful expensive vehicles would pay more into this tax to clean up their messes. those who are poor and cannot purchase as much would not be burdened with a huge tax, but their massive combined consumption would have them paying a big chunk.

This would also tax foreign goods sold in US markets. let us face it we are the market for many industries. There are many businesses that make a lot of money off of being able to sell in the US. There is also internet sales which are not being tapped yet. This sort of tax would see revenue from both of these groups who are not contributing to their fullest.

You can protect manufacturing and resellers the same way states do, and that is by tax exempt status on good that are to be resold or made into a final product. Or you could also allow them to see a discount on bulk purchases. In other words normal consumers would pay 2 percent for each of product X they purchase, but by bundling product X into a palate and selling the palate as a single unit at a discount your would lower the taxes paid by reseller businesses. There are a number of options you could use to offset the cost of doing business, while still seeing revenue from commerce.

The system is already in place as we already have methods for sales tax. This system is a lot easier than the present taxation system the federal government has and would not involve increasing the burden of paperwork on the populace as the tax is calculated per transaction, and is paid on the spot.

Collecting sales tax means a legitimate sales tax ID number, and that means filings with the government and accountability. You immediately have a new system of tracking for fraudulent sellers, and put another road block in the way of scammers because you need an entity legitimately responsible for paying the tax.

I know tax is a four letter word of evil, but in reality taxes are what allows our government to function and do the things we want it to do. yes, it also allows it to do some of the things we bitch about too. For every social welfare program there are corporate welfare programs and military programs. No matter what party you support they need taxes to function. The US is in financial trouble right now, and it is due to the fact we have our government doing a lot of things, yet we feel we should not pay for it. The reality is we need to pay for our social programs, the military, education, infrastructure, the legal system, jails, and a whole lot more. This tax would be huge, and it would come from all areas of the nation and abroad for the use of this nation.

WHY does the Federal Government need more REVENUE when it spends it on:
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has so far awarded $1.44 million in federal funds to a project that, among other things, is estimating the size of the population and examining the “social milieu” of male prostitutes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

$1.44 Million spent to study male prostitutes in Vietnam

WHY...Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties!!!
WHY???

WHY???
Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them --
costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually --
fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve!

Why are YOU in favor of an entity THAT GLADLY pays 6,000% more then the services cost?
Why are YOU in favor of MORE money to the government that accepts that hospitals
markup Medicare claims sometimes 6,000% more then the costs?

Medicare then claims.. "we need more money!"!

DO YOU KNOW WHY Medicare is OK with paying 6,000% markups?

LOOK UP EMTALA... another "good intention" that is costing Medicare $100 billion more a year then necessary!
LOOK UP HIPAA.. another "good intention" that costs Health care $50 billion more a year!
LOOK UP "Defensive Medicine" -- $600 billion a year WASTED in health care costs because
of FEAR !

NOW after doing a little research on those topics .. come back and again justify WHY the government NEEDS MORE MONEY!

A government that lent borrowed stimulus money to a auto builder in Finland!
A government that spent
$2.6 million to make sure prostitutes in China drink less on the job.

And you want MORE money going for stuff like that???

"Paying in proportion to one's consumption would be the measure of 'fair', Libtard."

Keep your mindless categorizations for yourself, troglodyte.

The rich should pay in proportion to their consumption.

Great! But the reality remains. m
Without a rate that bankrupts the middle class you will not have enough noney to fund just the military,

I'd be for it if you eliminated the income tax, but as an addon no..because they start low and end up high. But it is the fairest tax and you cant pit groups against each other and you get income even from people that skirt the rules, like criminals and people getting paid under the table.

That's what the VAT was supposed to do in the UK. They brought in a VAT and sold it as 'we will scrap the income tax and replace it with the VAT'. Did they do that? No. Now, in the UK, they pay a national income tax and VAT. Lesson: never trust your government to keep its promise.

I am not talking about a huge sales tax, just 1 or 2 percent.

 Yeah, because it will never get higher than that, right?? That's exactly how the income tax started out, you know. Just a small tax on the top 2% of wealth earners. How did that one work out? God are you ignorant.

I know, people hate taxes, but whether or not you want a well oiled war machine, or you want to make sure the poor are fed

I would prefer that we rein in the military industrial complex and stick strictly to military spending here at home in defense of our nation, rather than having 700 military bases around the world and engaging in foreign wars we can't afford. I would also prefer the poor feed themselves just like I feed myself and my son.

Just the operations of our government has increased to such an extent

And that's really the crux of the issue, isn't it. Hmmmmm... maybe we ought to address that piece first, you think?

US income Tax was supposed to be temporary [at least that's how it was sold by the progressives to garner support by the public].:eusa_shhh:

"Who told you wealth in America is supposed to be transferred, commie?"

Although this could not have been addressed to me since commie could not apply, I will nonetheless give an answer.
Who told me? The rich, by doing all they could to transfer the tax burden onto the poor. Reagan's time saw tax reduced from the wealthy in direct proportion to the increase on lower incomes. Others continued this trend.
But don't take that as a criticism of just Republicans; it goes for Democrats, too, who let it happen.

Sales taxes are wonderful for those who support a regressive tax system where low income earners pay the biggest percentage of their income in taxes and the wealthiest pay the lowest. This is why the rich pay the smallest percentage of taxes at the state level and the lowest income earners pay the highest percentage. I know, I know, it's the poor that are the cause of our economic problems, so let's make them pay their fair share.

 thats what they always say......go back and read the the Sixteenth Amendment and the established codes rates etc....... take a look at what we have going on now.....see how that works?

no way.

I have a better system; just stop taxing the top 20% of income earners completely, and put a 70% flat tax on the rest of us. That ought to work well.
