Such a sales tax would have to be incredibly high. Since the rich spend a comparatively small part of their income on such purchases the burden would fall, with repressive heaviness, on those who make less money.

I would prefer that we rein in the military industrial complex and stick strictly to military spending here at home in defense of our nation, rather than having 700 military bases around the world and engaging in foreign wars we can't afford. I have a better system; just stop taxing the top 20% of income earners completely, and put a 70% flat tax on the rest of us. That ought to work well.
