Why is Liberal a 4 Letter Word?

Liberalism is a political current embracing several historical and present-day ideologies that claim defense of individual liberty as the purpose of government
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

So, classical liberalism would appear to be very noble, and currently embraced by the Libertarian party.

So, how in this political climate, did it become a 4 letter word to be a liberal?

Is classic liberalism a real representation of what most libs stand for today?

Well, first of all, that depends on who you mean by "most libs."

If lib is a derogatory term slapped onto people whose political ideology doesn't match your own, then I'd suggest not.

If, on the other hand, these libs are self-proclaimed, then we have a different story.

Certainly, both the ACLU and the NRA represent the defense of personal liberty, the cornerstone of classical liberalism, while covering both the left and right of the current political spectrum.

Perhaps we should not be concerned with right and left, lib and con, but rather concern ourselves with our freedoms.

Again with the flaming! Please, keep such comments to yourself.

I thought that's the only thing a modern day lib cared about---doing anything they feel like!

Wow, that was quite the load.

Perhaps you should change the topic of the thread if discussing liberalism was not your intent. Try wikipedia's definition of "our freedoms"

the truth hurts huh? flaming was not the intent...reality was! :lame2:

"I am offended---stop doing what you are doing"------that attitude supports personal freedoms ?

No.

I was hoping for a more concrete example.

(Perhaps an ACLU case?)

I really don't feel like getting into an argument (i.e. flame war) with you, so please, either make your comments constructive, or don't make them at all.

I believe that what was considered 'classical liberalism' in America was undermined and usurped by Socialist and internationalist propaganda during the 70's. The holders of the new term 'liberal' are nothing like those which originally fought for equal civil rights (and not affirmative action), freedom from government influence and taxation, and many other issues I won't go into here which are now held more universally among everyone BUT Liberals.

Flaming??---I'm operating with constraint !

Then perhaps you would like to elaborate on what exactly you know about my nature?
