But it also makes you look like a fraud.

Kinda like some doucher a long time ago who was singing the praises of Black Sabbath and their great guitarist Tommy Iommi.

Yeah, I'm a fraud because I typed Jimmy instead of Jimi. He IS the best guitar player out there, but Neil is still my favorite musician.

There are plenty of great guitarists that have come and gone, but none that have influenced EVERYONE that has come since like Jimi. For that reason alone only an ignorant fool would place anyone above Hendrix.

And that influence was not just in Rock! He totally transformed the electric guitar in Jazz also!

it's a consensus among players about current players

going back in time is tough, if only for the evolution of the instrument itself being something that , in the last 40 yrs, has advanced leaps/bounds

Hendrix was OK and not worth the constant admiration and attention.

Clapton once say that Hendrix was so popular because "He was a spade with a big dick" that's probably why Mani loves him so much as to NegRep me.

Hendrix was a pioneer who took electric guitar playing in a whole other direction.

Is there anyone better? Well, that really depends on genre now doesn't it? But for"acid rock" guitar playing, I say yes, he's probably the best there ever was.
