I'll be giving away my age here, but I saw Jimi back in the early 60s in the Village, before Chas Chandler of the Animals found him and brought him to England. He played under the name Jimi James and the Blue Flames. You could tell he was great way back then.

There are plenty of great guitarists that have come and gone, but none that have influenced EVERYONE that has come since like Jimi. For that reason alone only an ignorant fool would place anyone above Hendrix.

SRV is only one that even comes close IMO, simply because he is the only guitarist that could actually play Jimi better than Jimi. But that's also why he falls short. He's probably the most physically skilled to ever play the six string, but his best material is covers of Hendrix.
