I chose this forum, for I did not know where to place it.

I am a very old man, but in some ways, I am still very naïve and innocent.

I have been noticing that some people are using the word "hard-on" in a negative fashion. That is, they will say: "Tom does NOT like Raul. Tom has long had a hard-on for Raul."

I had always thought if you had a hard-on for someone, that meant that you liked (were excited by) him/her.

I learned in the Army that when someone has a hard on for you it means they are out to get you...

We have many, many colloquialisms that have to do with buggery, and this is one of them.

    "He got the shaft."

Many thanks to the diamond member and the two gold members for educating me. I now understand.

Please remember that "hard-on" and "Give someone the shaft" are NOT used in polite society.

For example, if you said those words to your boss on Monday, you would be looking for a new job on Tuesday.
