What's the cause of the resurgence in fringe ideas?

Flat earth, chem-trails, JFK and Elvis shop at the 7-11 and so on.

Where do these wacko ideas come from? I think this is an interesting op/ed. Any thoughts?

Actually, that's pretty much it. People need to belong to something. Many are afraid to go it alone or think for themselves. The most obvious is religion. The kkk, nazi, trumpism beliefs appeal to the very weak. And there has always been a segment of our world who look for a way to set themselves apart. The usual result of that is they end up looking like others.
