Found that PROGRESS is the top motivator of knowledge workers.

I find a mortgage and kid strong motivation. That and the homeless lunatic in the local park who prophesises every time I pass by that I will soon join him.

Let me try to put it in a situation even you might relate to:

You're asked to flip 500 hamburgers for lunch-rush, and 1000 people show up every day for lunch? You know damn well you should have 1000 hamburgers, but management insists they know better, and the cost will be less if we just prep for 500 burgers.

So every day you have 500 angry customers waiting for you to get their lunches together, pissed off at YOUR incompetance.

However, one day the boss asks you what should be done to increase business. He agrees to implement your idea to prep 1000 burgers, and 1000 customers walk away happy. The next day some begin bringing their friends.
