Obama 'to raise Wallenberg fate with Russia'
5 Sept.`13 > US President Barack Obama will ask Moscow what happened to Swedish Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg after he was taken into Soviet custody and disappeared in 1945, Wallenberg's family told Swedish media.
Wallenberg was posted as a Swedish diplomat to Nazi-occupied Budapest in July 1944 and rescued tens of thousands of Jews by issuing them protective passports in the final months of the Holocaust. He went missing after his arrest by Soviet forces in Hungary on January 17, 1945. Obama, who met with Wallenberg's relatives during a visit to Stockholm on Wednesday, vowed to raise the issue with Russia on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Saint Petersburg on Thursday and Friday, Wallenberg's 92-year-old half-sister Nina Lagergren told Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet. "'I'm going to see Putin, and I plan to raise this with the Russians' he told us," Lagergren said after meeting the US leader in Stockholm's Great Synagogue where he viewed Wallenberg artifacts, including his phone book, diary and Swedish passport.

Soviet and later Russian officials have claimed the Swede died of heart failure in Soviet custody on July 17, 1947, but have never produced conclusive proof. Sceptics have questioned that version, with some saying he was executed. In 2000 the head of a Russian commission of investigation said Wallenberg was killed in Lubyanka, the notorious building where the KGB security services were headquartered. At a ceremony in Budapest in August 2012 kicking off a year-long commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Wallenberg's birth, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said his country had never officially contested the Russian accounts but maintained there was "insufficient evidence to draw any firm conclusions."

Two researchers with a Swedish-Russian working group on Raoul Wallenberg said last year they had uncovered a document showing that after a brief period of increased openness shortly before the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, the KGB security service and its Russian successor the FSB had begun actively working to block the Wallenberg probe. The document, found in the Swedish foreign ministry archive, also showed the Swedish embassy in Moscow had early on been informed of the Russian stumbling blocks but never officially protested. Wallenberg's half-sister Lagergren said she thought Obama might be able to get some answers from Russia. "Yes, I think the time has come," she said.

Sweden ready to declare World War Two hero Wallenberg dead 70 years after disappearance
29 Mar.`16 - The Swedish Tax Authority said it is ready to declare Raoul Wallenberg dead, more than 70 years after the diplomat, who helped rescue thousands of Hungarian Jews at the end of the Second World War, was captured by Soviet forces in Budapest.
The fate of Wallenberg, who would be 104 years old this year, has been shrouded in mystery since he was captured in 1945. He had helped save thousands of Jews from the Nazis by issuing them provisional Swedish passports so they could flee to Sweden.

A Russian report claimed he died in the infamous Lubyanka prison in 1947, but no definitive proof has been put forward. Wallenberg, from one of Sweden's most powerful business family dynasties, has been made an honorary citizen of the United States, Canada, Hungary, Austria and Israel, and he was awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal in 2012.

SEB bank, executor of his estate, asked the tax authority to declare him dead. The authority said in an announcement in daily Svenska Dagbladet that it will take a decision on the matter after a period of six months.

Sweden declares Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg officially dead
Mon, 31 Oct 2016 - Raoul Wallenberg, who rescued thousands of Jews from the Nazis, is declared dead by Sweden.
Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped thousands of Hungarian Jews to escape Nazi mass murder in World War Two, has been formally pronounced dead by Sweden's Tax Agency. He was arrested by Soviet forces in Hungary in 1945 and disappeared. He is thought to have died in a Soviet prison, but his fate remains a mystery. Thousands of Jews escaped deportation to Auschwitz because Wallenberg gave them Swedish protective passes. His story became legendary after 1945. The former Soviet authorities said he must have died in a Moscow prison in 1947. But his family were sceptical about that version of events, and spent decades trying to establish what actually happened to him.

'Died in 1952'

Last November they called on the Swedish Tax Agency to officially declare him dead. The request was made via Sweden's SEB Bank, acting as a trustee. "He shall be deemed to have died 31 July, 1952," the tax agency said. Pia Gustafsson of the tax agency said that date was chosen because it fell "five years after he went missing, which was believed to be the end of July, 1947". That procedure complied with a Swedish law used in cases where the circumstances of death were not clear, she told the BBC. His family requested that he be declared dead officially, in order to "let Raoul rest in peace", Sweden's Aftonbladet daily reported.

In August the World Jewish Congress quoted a report alleging that Wallenberg was executed in a Soviet prison in 1947. The claim was made in a diary by Ivan Serov, a former director of the Soviet KGB secret police. The Israeli Holocaust memorial at Yad Vashem honours Wallenberg as one of the "righteous among the nations" for having saved so many Jewish lives in the war. Wallenberg's rescue efforts began in July 1944, after his arrival as a diplomat in Budapest. The Nazis had already deported nearly 440,000 Jews from Hungary, most of them to the Auschwitz death camp, where many were murdered on arrival.

Ms Gustafsson said two contradictory Russian statements had contributed to Sweden's decision to declare Wallenberg dead:

* The "Smoltsov report" which said Wallenberg died of a heart attack in his cell in a Moscow prison on 17 July 1947
* KGB documents handed over in 1991 revealed Wallenberg had been questioned in Moscow's Lubyanka prison on 23 July 1947.

Wallenberg's mother Maj von Dardel and stepfather Fredrik von Dardel committed suicide in 1979, heartbroken over the Soviet authorities' failure to disclose details of Wallenberg's fate, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Why would Barry Hussein care about a single Jew who went missing while in Soviet custody in the freaking 40's when he left Americans to rot in Mid East prisons during his term in office? More political propaganda?
