What Capitalism has Done for the Common Man.

Capitilism is a great tool in many areas. Socialism is also a great tool in many areas. Neither functions well in all areas. Properly used they supplement each other.

Wrong, Socialism isn't great for anything accept enslaving and impoverishing the population. What does socialism do better than capitalism other than looting the productive for the benefit of a privileged class?

Dumb fuck. Our National Parks are a socialistic institution. What is more socialistic than preserving the very best and most unique for the benefit of all citizens? And doing it with taxpayer money. How about the Military? Police forces? Fire fighters? Think that those all should be run on a capitilistic basis.

You one note looney tunes really need to look at the reality of the world around you.

Yup.

Capitalism can be a highly productive system that can benefit a society greatly, no doubt.

OTOH, it does have some problems.

Like for example the 46 recession/depressions our system has suffered in the last 236 years.

Perhaps these economic downturns are a perfectly nature part of the system.

Or perhaps they are contrived by the money masters to insure that they continue to gain control over greater and greater percentage of the overall wealth.

But either way, the fact is that capitalism does have a propensity for providing us with a UNSTABLE economy.

There's no such thing as a stable economy.

All those things are actually excellent examples of what is wrong with socialism. They can continually ask for more and more regardless of whether they are actually doing more and more. They really have the taxpayers as hostages to pay their tabs. In the beginning they were run by the community then it was decided we should have a permanent force to handle fires and police. It was not high paying because it was not something that most could not already do. So instead of letting the capitalist process decide the wages by how much you need to pay to get people to do the job, they decided they would use a union to force what they want on the tax payers.

Scary times when someone trusts government more that business. When those businesses are gone, government will provide everything you need. I don't think that meets the definition of a Constitutional Republic.

Yea, that's a great alternative to Capitalism.

Little by little, over time the government swallows everything..........we are on the path to total government dependence.

The Hell with Capitalism, it just doesn't work.

The video also doesn't go into the problem of resource depletion. Individual economic actors who need to take care of their children are not going to worry that they are destroying non-renewable resources. Capitalism burns through resources more efficiently than any other system. It has the power to change global weather patterns and the ideological tools to drive science into profit friendly conclusions. It may eventually destroy fresh water and productive cropland. It's a bulldozer and it has the resources to silence non-market voices who warn that we should slow down on petrol-intensive systems because the stuff is running out. When a scientist first warned that we needed to shift away from petroleum, it was profit which shut him down. It was in someone's short term self interest to distort the facts. This is what happens when you put self-interest about everything. People can benefit by individual decisions that drive us collectively off a cliff.

I lived through the gas lines of the 70s graduating from college looking for work under the Misery leader.. Carter AND there was a book that came out called:
"Technology: Whale Oil, Arab Oil and No Oil" Gould Incorporated
Premise: During 1800s whale oil was used for lamp lights and whales were being hunted to extinction... OH woe... what will we do???
Then the discover of petroleum and in the Middle East ARAB OIL.. everything great till
the gas lines.. "OH woe... what will we do???

Not an issue folks... Natural gas has DROPPED nearly 75% in cost and supply is almost
infinite!
Now more oil patch discoveries are finding oil.
AND ever hear of Abiotic oil ?
There is an alternative theory about the formation of oil and gas deposits that could change estimates of potential future oil reserves. According to this theory, oil is not a fossil fuel at all, but was formed deep in the Earth's crust .

I'm going to present private sector employment, because republicans hate government employee's

Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government
workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not
get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back
on government and help the American people.”

private sector jobs

Eight years of supply side vulture capitalism.
Jan 2001 --111,631
Jan 2009 --110,985
---------------646 thousand jobs lost.

11 years,8 months of supply side vulture capitalism.
Jan 2001 --111,631
Jul 2012 --111,317
---------------314 thousand jobs lost.

Three trillion dollars in tax cuts in 11 and 1/2 years, and we wind up with
314 thousand jobs lost.

For Republicans, Lying is a way of life.

"Communism never works and will always fail."

Odd that it is how the religion of Christianity started off.

The question about alternatives was sincere and not a trick or anything.

I've used small c all my life and see nothing inherently wrong with it. I also see that uses of it have led to an untenable point in human history. I would be interested in alternatives in economics as in technology and politics. I intuit that we are in a new epoch as that when the renaissance evolved from medieval times. We need to consciously change things for the better or take it in the neck for allowing outdated thinking to destroy us.

Yes because the economy is that simple.

There were many religious utopian societies that failed in early America. The system that prevailed was that many played slash and burn policies and that will only last so long. the USA was never a totally capitalistic society.

The communal living you reference worked for a very short time, then failed.

It is nevertheless interesting that this was their initial response, what seemed natural to them to do as fair and loving followers of their Christ.

Again in fantasy and fiction it works great. In practice it never works. Didn’t you say we need to stop the old and start the new? I agree we need to keep with the new capitalism and get away from the old failing communism. You could say even the nobles with the slaves serving their land was communism. All the servants were treated as equals.

I'm not saying they were treated equal to the nobles but equal to each other. The Nobles in this example would be the government in communism and the slaves the citizens being treated as equal. Given basic needs and then worked to death. They were taken “From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs”.

"Didn’t you say we need to stop the old and start the new?"

Certainly! Nothing in the other posts said what I wanted, only made statements or posed questions about conditions.

Perhaps by looking at how things work and when they don't, honestly and without doctrinal blinders, we may arrive at a new beginning.
