California had both the largest Asian population of any state at 6 million people as of July 2012 and the largest numeric increase of Asians -- 136,000 people -- since July 2011. California, which had 14.5 million Hispanics last year, also had the largest Hispanic population of any state as well as the largest numeric increase -- 232,000 people -- within the Hispanic population. "It has changed a little bit in the last couple of years where...Hispanics have kind of leveled off (in terms of immigration and migration) but Asians have not. They have been continuing to come into the state and into the nation," said John Malson, research manager of the demographic research unit at the California Department of Finance. "By percentages, they've been coming into the state by larger numbers than Hispanics."
Asians and Hispanics have long been among the nation's fastest-growing race or ethnic groups, said Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau's acting director, in a statement. More than 60 percent of the Asian population growth came from international migration, whereas Hispanic population growth was mainly driven by natural increase, or the number of births minus deaths, census officials said. Hispanics, which represent about 17 percent of the nation's total population, are still the second largest race or ethnic group after non-Hispanic whites.
After the economic recession hit in 2007, California demographers noticed that a large number of Hispanics migrated out of the state. These are people that most likely had low-skilled jobs that were looking for employment elsewhere -- either in their native countries or in other states -- since the recession was steeper in California than it was in other states, Malson said. "We noticed Hispanic migration dropped very fast, and even became negative for a few years," Malson said. While those numbers have picked up, "migration figures are not nearly as high as they were before the recession hit in 2007."
L.A. County, the most populous county in the nation, had the largest Asian and Hispanic populations of any county nationwide -- 1.6 million and 4.8 million respectively -- in July 2012 and the largest numeric increases -- 25,000 for Asians and 55,000 for Hispanics -- since July 2011. Since April 2010, the Asian population in L.A. County has increased 3.3 percent while the Hispanic population increased 2.4 percent. In San Bernardino County, both the Asian and Hispanic populations increased almost 5 percent since 2010. Meanwhile, non-Hispanic whites in L.A. County decreased since 2010 by about .9 percent and by 2.1 percent in San Bernardino County, according to the census data. Nationwide, it was the first time non-Hispanic whites had a negative natural increase -- whereby deaths outnumbered births by about 12,000 -- since at least 2004, said Larry Sink, a U.S. Census Bureau statistician.
U.S. Census Bureau: Asians fastest growing ethnic group in the nation last year - LA Daily News
These two milestones, revealed in 2012 census estimates released Thursday, are the latest signs of a historic shift in which whites will become a minority within a generation, by 2043. They come after the Census Bureau reported last year that whites had fallen to a minority among newborns. Fueled by immigration and high rates of birth, particularly among Hispanics, racial and ethnic minorities are growing more rapidly in numbers than whites. The decline in the U.S. white population has been occurring more quickly than expected, resulting in the first "natural decrease" for whites — deaths exceeding births — in more than a century, census data show. For now, the non-Hispanic white population continues to increase slightly, but only because of immigration from Europe.
Based on current rates of growth, whites in the under-5 group are expected to fall below 50 percent this year or next, said Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau's acting director. "This is the tipping point presaging the gradual decline of the white population, which will be a signature demographic trend of this century," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. "More so than ever, we need to recognize the importance of young minorities for the growth and vitality of our labor force and economy."
The imminent tip to a white minority among young children adds a racial dimension to government spending on early-childhood education, such as President Barack Obama's proposal to significantly expand pre-K for lower-income families. The nation's demographic changes are already stirring discussion as to whether some civil rights-era programs, such as affirmative action in college admissions, should be retooled to focus more on income than on race and ethnicity. The Supreme Court will rule on the issue this month. The government projects that in five years, minorities will make up more than half of children under 18.
Studies show that gaps in achievement by both race and class begin long before college, suggesting that however the high court rules, the U.S. remedies to foster equal opportunity will need to reach earlier into a child's life. "The educational system is likely to be the most widely used and most acceptable policy tool we have for equalizing life chances. But it does not seem so far to achieve this goal," said Timothy Smeeding, an economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who specializes in income inequality. "This specter of unequal opportunity may be the biggest negative social outcome of the continuing American inequality boom."

I think Asian Americans are not as powerful as white and black is because many of them are only second generations of their family to immigrate to the states. And many of them are still too young to have a voice in the country. No offense but the first generation of immigrate usually cannot completely get themselves involved in the American society, so they are hard to speak out. Unlike whites or blacks, they have been here for a hundred years, their culture formed what U.S. is now. But asian culture is more considered as an exotic thing. It is just about time for the states to absorb a new culture into their established culture. So I think 10 or more years later, the Asian voice will be more powerful in the states. It is just about the time.
I love Asian Americans. Especially the female kind.
Orientals are superior to white Gentiles of European ancestry the same way that white Gentiles of European ancestry are superior to Hispanics, and the same way that Hispanics are superior to blacks. In addition to having higher average IQ's they have lower rates of crime and illegitimacy.
Ashkenazi Jews have higher average IQ's than Orientals. I do not know about the rates of crime and illegitimacy among the Ashkenazim, but I suspect that they are lower than among white Gentiles of European ancestry.
